Mr. Chen chairs the patent litigation and licensing department at the firm.

Mr. Chen has extensive experience in patent litigation and licensing matters. He has represented clients in high stake patent lawsuits in the consumer electronics industry. Mr. Chen was part of a litigation team who won consistently for their clients – summary judgment, trial, even appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Chen’s versatile experience further includes devising and enforcing technology licensing programs for global companies, conducting technology licensing work, and counseling clients on their IP strategies.

Mr. Chen attended college in China in the early 90s. He was later enrolled in the prestigious Biochemistry, Cellular, and Molecular Biology PhD program at Johns Hopkins University before switching to a legal career. He obtained his J.D. degree from the Northwestern University School of Law and graduated with honors.

Mr. Chen lives in the Los Angeles area. At his free time, he enjoys hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains with his family or taking a walk on the Santa Monica beach.

Hua Chen

Calvin Chai is a Partner at ScienBiziP P.C. in Los Angeles, where he leads the day-to-day operation of the firm while providing litigation and licensing counseling to clients in Asia and Europe.

Prior to forming SBPPC, Calvin Chai was an in-house patent attorney at Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. (Foxconn). In 2014, Calvin relocated and joined Foxconn’s central IP team newly spun-out consulting company in Taiwan, where he advised Asia clients on licensing and M&A matters.

Calvin graduated from Cornell Law School in 2007. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information and Computer Science from University of California, Irvine. Calvin was born in Taipei and raised in California. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

Amir Bahrami

Head of Prosecution

Amir specializes in intellectual property law with an emphasis on the prosecution of patent applications in various technical fields including electronic, computer, networking, telecommunications, and mechanical fields. Amir has worked to meet the varying needs of clients ranging from reputable large corporations, such as Apple, Amazon, and VMware, to smaller startups, such as Ring, as well as individual inventors.

Prior to joining SBP, Amir was an in-house counsel at Ring and with the in-house experience, he has a unique perspective on the intellectual property-related issues that companies encounter, and understands the requirements of providing effective counsel to corporate clients to resolve those issues.

Alvin Koan

Of Counsel

Alvin S. Koan Sr. is a registered patent attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and licensed to practice law in California. As a senior associate at ScienBiziP, P.C. in Los Angeles, Alvin’s practice focuses on preparation and worldwide prosecution of patents, as well as patent counseling and opinions, developing and managing patent portfolios, due diligence evaluations, technology assessments, and IP litigation support.

Alvin has prepared and prosecuted to issuance hundreds of patent applications, involving electrical, software, mechanical, and biomedical technologies, for a number of large U.S. and international corporate clients. In recent years, Alvin has been actively involved in the analysis, preparation and prosecution of standard-essential patent (SEP) applications related to the 3GPP 5G New Radio wireless communication standards.

Alvin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Alvin was enrolled in the Master of Science program in electrical engineering at UCLA before he decided to pursue a career in law. Alvin holds a Juris Doctor degree from University of La Verne, College of Law. During law school, Alvin received academic scholarships for three consecutive years for his excellent academic performance.

Shruti Aggarwal

Ms. Aggarwal graduated with a JD and Master's from Pepperdine Law School, having an undergraduate degree in engineering from UC Berkeley. She focuses on litigation matters while being supervised by Mr. Chen.

Annie McNallly

Patent Agent

Annie is a patent agent and has been working in intellectual property law firms since 2006. Prior to working in law firms, Annie was a material processing engineer in an aerospace company, specialized in forming and heat treating of titanium alloys panels used in most Boeing and Airbus airplanes. Annie also managed the testing laboratory of the company.

Annie has a Master degree in materials science research from Imperial College of Technology and Medicine, London, UK. Her research topic was material characterizations of PVD and CVD coated stainless steels.

Annie was born and raised in Taiwan and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Annie and her husband, Patrick, immigrated to United States from Ireland, and are now happily living and raising their twin daughters in beautiful Southern California.

Kelvin Liu

Senior Patent Agent

Mr. Kelvin Liu was born in Hong Kong. He moved to the United States after completing elementary school. He lived in Southern California and graduated from UCI in 2004. Mr. Liu has over 4 years of working experience as a R&D scientist in chemical and materials industry. Mr. Liu switched his career path to consumer electronics, specifically building his knowledge in display ranging from CRT to liquid crystal LED displays.

Starting from 2012, Mr. Liu took interests in patent prosecution and begin his apprenticeship under an U.S. patent practitioner. He practiced patent prosecution in the field of semiconductors and fabrication methods, liquid display panels, consumer electronics, chemicals, and materials. With his passion in patent prosecution, he decided to take the U.S. Patent Bar. In 2015, he became a registered patent agent and began prosecuting patent applications with ScienBiziP, P.C. in Downtown Los Angeles till this day.

Mr. Liu is a native Cantonese/English speaker while reads, writes, and speaks fluent Mandarin. He also has great interests in 3-D design.

Jerry Yang

Patent Agent

Mr. Yang has worked as a patent engineer in a patent law firm based in Taiwan since 2013 before joining SBPPC. Over the years, he honed his expertise in the complexities of patent law, patent prosecution, and intellectual property strategy, and became a registered patent agent in 2018. He now specializes in patent applications concerning medical devices, liquid display panels, consumer electronics, materials, and chemicals.
